What inspired you to release “You’re A Woman” on International Women’s Day, and how do you hope it contributes to the celebration of women’s empowerment?
Kenny J: The inspiration behind this song was to appreciate all women. The song is meant to honor, to love on and give them their flowers. I often feel it’s important to honor those who have been supportive to us. Women are solely responsible for populating our world and that alone is a reason to honor them. I hope the song remains just a reminder of the gift that women are. Hopefully it can be an anthem they can hold on to.
“You’re A Woman” seems to carry a powerful message. Can you delve into the specific themes and emotions you aimed to convey through this particular song?
Kenny J: Every artist should have an aim and a projection of their creations. This song was aimed at empowering, by encouragement. Hearing a song designed specifically to make your day should hopefully do just that.
Can you share some insights into the creative process behind your upcoming full-length R&B album set to release in early summer 2024?
Kenny J: Yes, The creative process on the upcoming album is a fun and enjoyable process. I have the process, there’s no pressure, it’s just what I’ve always done; to make music with passion and love. It will definitely be infused with love, perspective, process and answers.
In a musical landscape that often leans towards various genres, what motivated your decision to focus on bringing back positive R&B music?
Kenny J: There was no motivation to bring back R&B, as R&B has always existed and will forever exist. I wanted to be a part of creating a vibe that can be shared across the world, hopefully being a part of change through my music.
Losing your wife last year must have been incredibly challenging. How has this personal experience influenced the themes and emotions in your upcoming album?
Kenny J: Yes, as most can imagine, that was a challenge. Part of therapy was my music. You’ll definitely hear some emotion of that experience in the project, but still have other themes. All these experiences, emotions and perspectives I believe you’ll enjoy.
With two daughters, your perspective on women’s empowerment is undoubtedly meaningful. How does your role as a father shape your approach to creating music that supports and uplifts women?
Kenny J: I believe as fathers we should value what comes out of us. As dads our job is to teach and lead from a level of wholeness. I can’t be too upset about what’s negative in music and create the same thing, as I’d be considered hypocritical. I need my daughters to see me as an example of a man. Hopefully from that example the man they choose in their life will be of value.
In today’s music industry, where diverse voices are crucial, how do you envision your music contributing to a positive and inclusive narrative, especially regarding the treatment and empowerment of women?
Kenny J: My music career will always be filled with positivity, love and great perspectives. I envision that my contributions will continue that way. As far as empowerment; I believe as creators our aim and mission as artists should include that as well. Whatever our subject matter is, it should be aimed and infused with solutions to things that we can correct.
