Somewhere in the musical universe, someone apparently asked: What if Plants vs. Zombies, Billie Eilish, three acoustic guitars and a world-class cellist all walked into a recording studio together?
Against all reasonable expectations, the answer absolutely slaps.
GRAMMY®-winning guitar trio The String Revolution have teamed up with powerhouse cellist Tina Guo for “Bad Zombies,” a wonderfully bizarre instrumental collision of “Crazy Dave’s Theme” from Plants vs. Zombies and Billie Eilish’s “bad guy.” And if that sentence sounds like somebody picked four things out of a hat, just wait until you hear how ridiculously well they fit together.
The track has the mischievous, slightly unhinged energy of the game, the slinky menace of “bad guy,” and enough guitar-and-cello fireworks to make the whole thing feel like the soundtrack to an extremely stylish zombie apocalypse.
But “Bad Zombies” isn’t really a mashup. That would undersell what’s happening here. The String Revolution — Janet Robin, Markus Illko and Rober Luis — tear both musical worlds apart and rebuild them into something that feels completely their own. They even composed original classical-inspired sections for the opening and closing, giving the track an actual narrative arc instead of simply playing recognizable melodies back-to-back.
Then Tina Guo shows up with her cello and, predictably, chooses violence.
Her playing brings enormous cinematic drama to the arrangement, bouncing beautifully against the trio’s guitars as the track moves from playful to sinister to downright epic. It’s technical without feeling like homework, sophisticated without taking itself too seriously and weird enough to keep you wondering what’s coming next.
The Billie Eilish connection makes the whole experiment even cooler. Eilish and FINNEAS grew up playing Plants vs. Zombies, and the game’s music helped inspire elements of “bad guy.” Here, they were involved in the arranging process from demo through the finished recording, essentially allowing the musical influence to travel full circle.
There’s something wonderfully nerdy about all of it.
And that may be the secret weapon of The String Revolution. This is a group that won a GRAMMY® for transforming Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” with Tommy Emmanuel, has tackled everything from Michael Jackson to Ozzy Osbourne, and seems constitutionally incapable of looking at genre boundaries without immediately trying to climb over them.
“Bad Zombies” might be their most delightfully chaotic experiment yet.
It’s part classical showcase, part rock performance, part pop reconstruction, part video-game nostalgia and 100 percent proof that somebody should occasionally be allowed to make a completely bonkers musical suggestion just to see what happens.
Apparently, sometimes you get zombies.
And sometimes the zombies groove.
