Some songs are made for the dance floor. Others are made for those mornings when you wake up, look at your to-do list, and seriously consider crawling back under the covers. Hanna-Maaria’s latest single, “Change My Vibe,” manages to be a little bit of both, and we’re absolutely here for it.
The Finnish singer-songwriter and former X Factor Finland runner-up has delivered a wonderfully upbeat, ’80s-inspired pop anthem that feels like a shot of espresso for the soul. With its bright keys, infectious rhythmic energy, and playful retro influences, “Change My Vibe” brings the kind of feel-good attitude that pop music could use a whole lot more of right now.
Think the colorful, carefree spirit of Cyndi Lauper with a dash of Chappell Roan’s modern pop personality, all filtered through Hanna-Maaria’s own melodic instincts and classical musical background. It’s nostalgic without feeling dated, uplifting without becoming cheesy, and just the right amount of quirky to stand out.
But what really makes this release interesting is the story behind it.
After moving into what appeared to be a dream apartment in Zürich, complete with a grand piano and beautiful acoustics, Hanna-Maaria began experiencing unexplained headaches and feeling generally miserable. The culprit eventually turned out to be mold, which is certainly not the kind of housewarming surprise anyone hopes for.
During that difficult period, however, she started thinking about happiness and how much control we actually have over our own outlook. That curiosity became the foundation for “Change My Vibe,” a song about recognizing the little things that make life worth appreciating, even when everything else feels like a mess.
And there’s something genuinely charming about that approach.
Rather than telling listeners to plaster on a smile and pretend their problems don’t exist, Hanna-Maaria offers a much more relatable perspective. Life can be frustrating, unpredictable, and downright exhausting. But maybe there’s still something to appreciate in your morning coffee, a little sunshine coming through the window, or a beautiful autumn afternoon.
It’s a simple message, sure, but sometimes those are the ones that resonate the most.
The song’s central declaration, “But I know I can change my vibe,” sums up that philosophy perfectly. It’s confident, encouraging, and refreshingly free of the preachy self-help language that can sometimes make positivity-themed pop feel a little forced.
There’s also a particularly fun bit of irony here. Hanna-Maaria comes from Finland, which has been named the world’s happiest country for nine consecutive years. Apparently, the Finns might know a thing or two about finding contentment, and Hanna-Maaria is doing her part to share some of that wisdom with the rest of us.
Beyond its uplifting message, “Change My Vibe” showcases an artist who understands the importance of personality in pop music. Hanna-Maaria’s classical piano training gives her a strong musical foundation, while her international experiences and contemporary influences allow her to move comfortably beyond traditional singer-songwriter territory. The result is a sound that feels polished, colorful, and distinctly her own.
Having lived and worked across Europe, collaborated with international songwriters, and built an impressive career that includes television competition success and performances across borders, Hanna-Maaria clearly has plenty of stories to tell. What makes this particular release so appealing is her decision to turn a frustrating personal experience into something lighthearted and universally relatable.
With her debut full-length album on the horizon, “Change My Vibe” feels like an exciting glimpse of an artist embracing her playful side without sacrificing substance.
And frankly, we could all use a little more of that.
“Change My Vibe” is bright, charming, wonderfully nostalgic, and full of heart. It’s the kind of pop song that encourages you to turn up the volume, shake off a bad morning, and remember that not every day has to be perfect to have something good in it.
So go ahead. Pour yourself another cup of coffee, open the curtains, and give this one a spin.
Your mood might just thank you.
