Calling all indie-heads, basement-show lifers, and Brooklyn music romantics: The Music Matters is back, and they’re throwing a two-night bash that’s part concert, part time capsule, and entirely unmissable.
On May 2 and May 3, the beloved DIY music platform that’s been amplifying the pulse of NYC’s underground since 2017 brings its latest live showcase to Our Wicked Lady (153 Morgan Ave). Doors swing open at 7:00 PM each night, with a jaw-dropping lineup curated by founder Marc Seligman—a man who eats cassette tapes for breakfast and dreams in guitar riffs.
But wait—there’s more. On the afternoon of May 3, the spirit of CBGB rises from the Lower East Side like a phoenix in skinny jeans. Starting at 2:00 PM, five emerging artists will throw down in an audition-style showcase that’s free to attend if you flash a Dice ticket before 2:30. Raw, reckless, and totally real—this is where the next legends cut their teeth.
Throughout the weekend, bring your stories, your vibes, and maybe a little eyeliner. A pop-up “confessional booth” will be on-site to capture your musical revelations, crushes on drummers, and opinions about that one band who definitely should’ve played last. These heartfelt dispatches will be woven into a full-length documentary (yep, real-deal DVD style) dropping this fall, following up last year’s now-iconic VHS release from Arlene’s Grocery.
So mark your calendars, tell your friends, and get ready to rage (and reflect). The Music Matters isn’t just a show—it’s a living, breathing love letter to the scene that refuses to die.
