Tone Ranger’s “Touchstone / Over the Moon” Is a Cosmic Forest Disco for Your Soul (and Maybe Your Houseplants)

Tone Ranger (a.k.a. Alex Simon, desert wizard and certified groove whisperer) is back—and this time, he’s brought sticks, stones, flutes, violins, outer space, and a rabbit. Yes, really.

His latest A/B-side single “Touchstone / Over the Moon” is like if Bon Iver went to Burning Man and forgot his shoes. It’s earthy, it’s celestial, it’s dance-y, it’s trance-y—and it might make you cry a little bit while barefoot in your backyard.

“Touchstone” kicks things off by slapping together actual field recordings from the forest floor—sticks clack, stones thump, and before you know it, you’re knee-deep in an enchanted woodland rave. Santa Fe’s Melas Leukos floats in on vocals like a woodland spirit with synth access, while Tone Ranger himself joins in with a soft, sparkly serenade that feels like moss hugging your heart. It’s primal, it’s gentle, it’s got bamboo flutes. Why? Because bamboo flutes are cool.

Then comes “Over the Moon,” which—surprise!—features an actual rabbit chant. Inspired by late-night van life under the stars (again, yes, really), this track takes a children’s rhyme, tosses it into a glitter cannon, and launches it into the cosmos. There are violins. There are guitars. There is a synth that sounds like it’s doing a cartwheel through Saturn’s rings. Evelyn Drach and Gracey Crane chant “Run, rabbit, run” like they’re guiding you through a dream about space bunnies and existential joy. It’s weird. It’s wonderful. It’s the soundtrack to your next full-moon picnic.

Tone Ranger calls the two tracks “the pulse beneath the pines” and “the heartbeat echoed back by the stars,” which honestly checks out. One’s got forest dirt under its fingernails. The other is wearing a cape made of moonlight. Together, they’re a danceable love letter to wonder itself.

And guess what? This is just the appetizer. Confluence, his upcoming album (dropping August 8), is coming for your brainwaves next. If this double single is any indication, Tone Ranger is building a sonic universe where everything is sacred, a little sweaty, and possibly enchanted.

So grab your crystals, charge your headphones, and tell your houseplants it’s time to boogie—Tone Ranger’s back, baby.
