Should LaRussell and JWAVY Make It Official? Seattle Artist’s JWAVY Shows Why Her Name Is Growing

JWAVY did not need LaRussell to know her music before stepping onto the Fremont Friday stage in Seattle.

She simply needed an opportunity.

When that opportunity came, the Seattle artist says she seized it — creating a moment she will never forget and giving her hometown another reason to pay attention to an independent artist who has already been building her résumé.

Could that moment eventually lead to something bigger between LaRussell and JWAVY?

Born Jasmine Smith, JWAVY — pronounced “J-Wavy” — comes from the west side of Seattle, Washington.

Her music carries what she calls the “Northern flow,” combining her delivery, cadence, style, authenticity, and attitude into a sound she believes leaves listeners with something to remember.

Her catalog includes WAVESZN, an EP that showcases several sides of her artistry.

Seattle artist Maribased1, JWAVY’s brother, appears on several records from the project, including “Beastmode,” “Sunset,” and “BS.”

The siblings have also collaborated on the popular single “Love Me.” That record became an important part of JWAVY’s journey as she made her debut on BET Jams.

JWAVY also appears on Maribased1’s album 48 oz’s, including features on “Slide” and “Aquafina.”

Her solo music has made noise on the charts.

“Broke Boi” reached No. 1 on Amazon Music’s Movers & Shakers chart and climbed to No. 28 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart. The single has also received radio rotation across Texas.

The record takes aim at the stereotypical male who tries to portray himself as a baller to impress a woman.

With “Summertime,” JWAVY wanted listeners to experience something different.

The song was created to make people feel good, vibe in the sun, and enjoy the day whether they are alone or with their crew. While the track acknowledges the best and worst of the summer season, its bigger message is about enjoying freedom, having fun, and building memories with the people closest to you.

For JWAVY, however, records and numbers are only part of what defines an artist.

She points to delivery, cadence, authenticity, and personal style as qualities that separate her.

“I’d say my delivery, cadence, authenticity and style we like to call the Northern flow along with the attitude displayed in my music is what makes me stand out and leaves people with something to remember,” she said. “All while staying true to myself.”

That confidence was tested in real time when LaRussell called her onto the stage at Fremont Friday.

“My experience on stage with LaRussell was such a surreal moment,” JWAVY said.

What impressed her was not only receiving an opportunity, but the message behind LaRussell creating space for another artist.

“He showed me that it’s okay to allow others to shine and how important it is to continue showing love to everyone and that your light will never go dim by supporting the next, it’ll only add to it.”

Doing it at home meant even more.

“The love I received at Fremont Friday in my own backyard was amazing and really pushed me to keep giving music my all,” she said.

JWAVY knew LaRussell had never heard her rap.

“For him to take a chance on me I knew I had to seize the moment,” she explained.

As she performed, she noticed his reaction.

“Seeing his reaction really looked like a proud big brother when I was rocking the stage,” JWAVY said. “The love I received from him and the crowd was top tier.”

She calls the experience a core memory and says she truly appreciates LaRussell for showing love to an independent artist.

As JWAVY continues building from Seattle, WAVESZN serves as an introduction to the music behind the momentum.
