BIRTH OF BASKETBALL (City of Legends) is an inspiring feature documentary that tells the powerful story of Springfield, Massachusetts — the birthplace of basketball and a city where the game became a way of life. Basketball was invented in Springfield in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith while he was an instructor at what is now Springfield College.
The film explores how a simple indoor game created in a small gym grew into a worldwide phenomenon — but more importantly, it tells the story of the people, neighborhoods, schools, and legends who carried the game forward.
The film begins taking viewers on a journey through generations of basketball excellence, rivalries, and community pride. It celebrates the players who became local heroes and went on to make their mark on the national stage.
Featured legends include Kevin Freeman, who helped lead the University of Connecticut to an NCAA Championship, along with Springfield basketball standouts Will Dawkins, Shawn Smith, Desi Jackson, Derek Stinson, Vinny Del Negro, Andrew Keaton, Chris Bailey, Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, Josh Presley, Derek Kellogg, Edgar Padialla, Fred Smith and many more who represent the heart and history of the city’s basketball tradition in both Boys and Girls Basketball.
