Some artists write songs about heartbreak. Others write about partying until sunrise, falling in love with the wrong person, or making questionable decisions after midnight. Eric HZ? He’s over here contemplating fatherhood, the meaning of existence, and his relationship with God. You know, just a few light topics for your afternoon playlist.

The Chinese singer-songwriter is making an ambitious emotional double feature out of his latest releases, “Child” (《孩子》) and “Encounter” (《还好遇见你》). And while the two songs explore different corners of the human experience, they share one unmistakable quality: Eric has absolutely no interest in keeping things superficial.

First up is “Child,” a tribute to the beautiful, exhausting, occasionally chaotic adventure known as parenting. Opening with the actual laughter of his children (a move that should probably come with a complimentary box of tissues), the Mandarin-language track explores unconditional love and the realization that no matter how old your kids get, they’ll always be your babies. Even when they’re making mistakes. Even when they’re driving you nuts. Even when they eventually decide your fashion advice is embarrassing.

But there’s more happening here than a proud dad getting sentimental. Eric is also making a statement about cultural identity. By singing in Mandarin, he’s reminding the world that meaningful pop music doesn’t require an English-language translation to connect with listeners. As he puts it, “Asian Pop should be a door, not a wall.” Frankly, that’s a philosophy the music industry could stand to embrace a little more often.

Then comes “Encounter,” which takes the emotional intensity up another notch. This time, Eric turns his attention toward faith, spiritual discovery, and that tiny existential question we’ve all occasionally pondered at 2 a.m.: Why exactly am I here?

Rather than treating religion as an obligatory Sunday sermon, “Encounter” frames faith as a deeply personal journey toward purpose and belonging. It’s a thoughtful companion to “Child,” shifting from the love a father gives to the grace he believes he has received.

And Eric isn’t exactly new to making meaningful connections. Between his classical vocal training, appearances at Lincoln Center, and efforts to promote Chinese-American cultural exchange, he’s clearly interested in building something that extends beyond his own discography.

Ultimately, “Child” and “Encounter” suggest an artist who understands that some of life’s biggest revelations arrive through surprisingly ordinary moments: a child’s laughter, a quiet prayer, or the realization that love might be the closest thing we have to a universal language.

Eric HZ isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here. He’s reminding us why it matters that the wheel keeps turning. And in a musical landscape frequently obsessed with what’s next, there’s something refreshing about an artist willing to celebrate what lasts.
