There are albums that pay tribute to musical history, and then there are albums that grab history by the hand, pour it a rum, and drag it straight onto the dance floor.<\/p>\n

Buena Vista Orchestra\u2019s Ayer, Hoy, Ma\u00f1ana<\/em> is very much the latter.<\/p>\n

The title translates to Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow<\/em>, which is fitting because this record manages to pull off a pretty fabulous trick: more than a century of Cuban music shows up to the same party, and somehow nobody feels out of place.<\/p>\n

Son, mambo, bolero, cha-cha-cha, Afro-Cuban jazz and generations of rhythmic innovation collide across an album that feels reverent without ever becoming precious. Buena Vista Orchestra clearly knows the giants whose shoulders it stands on \u2014 from Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez and Benny Mor\u00e9 to Celia Cruz, Chucho Vald\u00e9s and the legendary artists of Buena Vista Social Club \u2014 but Ayer, Hoy, Ma\u00f1ana<\/em> isn’t interested in simply polishing old trophies. This music is alive, sweaty and gloriously restless.<\/p>\n

\u201cCandela\u201d absolutely cooks, reworking the Cuban classic with enough swagger and rhythmic muscle to remind you why these songs became standards in the first place. Then there\u2019s \u201cChan Chan,\u201d featuring the incomparable Omara Portuondo, whose presence feels less like a cameo than a blessing passed between generations.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s ultimately what makes Ayer, Hoy, Ma\u00f1ana<\/em> such a joy. The musicianship is extraordinary, but the album never gets trapped underneath its own importance. It swings. It flirts. It grooves. It occasionally makes sitting politely in your chair feel like an unreasonable request.<\/p>\n

Buena Vista Orchestra isn\u2019t asking listeners to admire Cuban music from behind glass. They\u2019re reminding us that this is a tradition built to move \u2014 across generations, across borders and, preferably, across a dance floor.<\/p>\n

Yesterday gave them the music. Today, they\u2019re having one hell of a time with it.<\/p>\n

And tomorrow sounds pretty damn good.<\/p>\n
