USC Thornton School of Music has announced Raphael Saadiq as the inaugural member of its Dean’s Creative Vanguard Program, marking a groundbreaking collaboration under the leadership of Dean Jason King. Saadiq, a Grammy-winning artist, producer, and composer, will mentor students through spring 2025, sharing his 35+ years of influence in popular music to inspire the next generation of musical innovators.
Currently nominated for four Grammy Awards—including Song of the Year and Record of the Year for Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em”—Saadiq’s expertise spans songwriting, live performance, and music production. At USC, he will work closely with senior Pop Performance students, guiding their development as songwriters and performers. Together with USC faculty member and producer Tim Kobza, Saadiq will help refine student projects, culminating in a senior showcase at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre on March 9, 2025.
Beyond mentoring, select students will gain hands-on experience at Saadiq’s renowned Blakeslee Recording Studio, learning the intricacies of music production directly from the master.
This collaboration exemplifies USC Thornton’s commitment to fostering an interdisciplinary and innovative community. Saadiq’s diverse experience—including his work as a composer for Insecure, label executive, and performer—aligns with the school’s mission to empower students across stylistic boundaries.
“The students at USC Thornton inspired me with their thoughtful questions and fresh perspectives. It reminded me of my own days in the Young Musicians Program at UC Berkeley. I look forward to exchanging ideas, sharing insights, and shaping the future of music alongside these talented individuals,” Saadiq shared.
Dean Jason King described Saadiq as “one of the MVPs of popular music over the last 40 years,” noting his exceptional contributions as a songwriter, producer, and performer. Vice Dean Sean Holt added, “Having an icon like Raphael Saadiq co-teaching and mentoring our seniors is inspiring. His openness and wealth of knowledge are already making a tremendous impact as students prepare for their senior showcase.”
