Bands do BK, in partnership with an exceptional lineup of artists and producers, is thrilled to announce the release of The Music Matters NYC, a vibrant and nostalgic VHS compilation that celebrates the electrifying heart of New York City’s indie music community. This unique release captures the raw, unfiltered energy from a three-day live showcase at Arlene’s Grocery, held May 5-7, 2024, where 15 emerging bands united to amplify the powerful spirit of NYC’s music scene.
A Living Document of NYC’s Indie Legacy
Born from a vision to immortalize the close-knit dynamics of the local music scene, The Music Matters NYC embodies more than just live music; it’s a tribute to the genuine friendships and collaborations that fuel NYC’s underground art culture. Spearheaded by Executive Producer Marc Seligman and Production Coordinator Sam Sumpter, the compilation showcases 67 minutes of live performances and candid interviews, preserved in vintage VHS style for an analog homage to NYC’s enduring creative pulse.
“The NYC scene is full of insane talent—people making great music and supporting one another through every challenge,” says Sumpter, curator of Bands do BK. “This city can be unforgiving for musicians, but the art prevails. Each band featured on this VHS represents the beauty and resilience of this community.”
A Return to Arlene’s Grocery: The Heartbeat of NYC Music
While the Lower East Side’s Arlene’s Grocery has hosted many of today’s legends—including The Strokes and Lana Del Rey—this project brings Brooklyn’s current indie scene back to its Manhattan roots. It serves as both a celebration of history and a testament to the modern vitality of NYC’s music scene, proving that while eras may shift, the creative soul of New York City remains vibrant and tenacious.
Meet the Bands Keeping NYC’s Heart Beating
Featuring standout performances by bands like Big Girl, Tilden, AVATAREDEN, and Night Spins, The Music Matters NYC documents not only the music but the bond between these artists. As Marc Seligman observed, “It’s not just about the music; it’s about the companionship and mutual support. This VHS captures the heart of it all.”
Experience the Magic In Person and On-Screen
Alongside the VHS release, Bands do BK will host a Watch Party at Arlene’s Grocery (date TBD), inviting fans to gather and relive the electrifying performances. The VHS will be available for purchase at Bands do BK, Arlene’s Grocery, Village Revival Records, and directly from the featured bands at their live shows.
